If properly planned, a vacation to South Florida can be quite a memorable experience. There is the great weather, warm tropical breezes, white sandy beaches, a seemingly infinite number of fun things to do, ranging from world class restaurants to world class special events and nightlife. Doing it all in a Rolls Royce, Bentley, Maserati, Porsche or Ferrari of your choice will only sweeten the memories.
To find out some tips about renting these types of cars we turned to Carlos Duarte, the owner of Prestige Luxury Rentals of Miami, for some insider’s guidance on some do’s and don’ts when it comes to renting the car of your dreams in South Florida.
1. Plan Ahead
Make your reservations well in advance. Ideally, you should make your reservation two weeks in advance so you can get together any necessary support documentation which the rental company may require taking time during your vacation to pull the documents together.
Speaking of paperwork, make sure you have copies of your driver’s license for yourself as well as any other additional driver who may be operating the vehicle. A driver must be at least 25 years old.
Before making your reservation, confirm with your insurance carrier that it covers the vehicle you wish to rent in Florida. The exotic car rental company will be able to provide you with insurance, but it will be at an additional charge. Note that rental companies are not required to provide you with insurance.
2. Damage Deposit
In addition to a reservation deposit the rental company will require you to provide a damage deposit covering minor damage. This can be done with a credit card authorization or with cash.
When you set up your reservation you prepay the minimum of one day of exotic fun in the sun with the car of your dreams. If you have to cancel your reservation less than 48 hours in advance you may have to forfeit that deposit. During weeks which coincide with major South Florida special events this cancellation fee can even be higher.
4. Acceptable Forms of Payments
American Express, Visa, Discover and MasterCard are all accepted for fees and deposits. Cash works well, but personal or company checks do not.
5. On Time Every Time
Rentals charges are based on a 24 hour period. While it is possible for a one hour grace period, this grace period does not extend to rentals that are set up for after 20:00 hours (8 PM) or before 08:00 hours (8 AM). Another customer is likely waiting around for the car you rented, and if you are tardy in returning it, you are probably going to pay more.
6. Premium Fuel
Make sure that when you’re filling up you use the proper grade of gasoline. Putting in regular unleaded in a premium car can damage the car and ultimately your wallet. Bring the car back with the same amount of gas it went out with to avoid additional gas charges from the rental company.
7. Enjoy Florida
Under the customary rental terms and conditions in the rental agreement you will be required to keep the car within the State of Florida. If you plan to leave the State, advise the company before hand. Also note that the mileage allowance is 100 miles per day. If you plan to do more than speak to the rental company about any mileage surcharge before you take off for a longer trip.
